原文：
A potato farmer was sent to prison justat the time when he should have been digging the ground for planting the newcrop of potatoes. He knew that his wife would not be strong enough to do thedigging by herself, but that she could manage to do the planting; and he alsoknew that he did not have any friends or neighbors who would be willing to do thedigging for him. So he wrote a letter to his wife which said, “Please do notdig the potato field. I hid the money and the gun there.” Ten days later he gota letter from his wife. It said, “I think somebody is reading your lettersbefore they go out of the prison. Some policemen arrived here two days ago anddug up the whole potato field. What should I do now?” The farmer wrote back atonce, “Plant the potatoes, of course.”

有一位種馬鈴薯的農夫，正要翻土種植新作馬鈴薯的時候，被送進了監獄。他知道自己的妻子不夠強壯，只憑她自己不能夠挖掘翻土，但她可以完成播種的工作；而且，農夫也知道沒有任何朋友或鄰居願意幫忙自己翻土。於是，他寫了一封信給他的妻子，上面寫著：「請不要挖馬鈴薯田，我藏了一些錢和槍在那裡。」十天後，農夫收到了妻子的回信，寫道：「在信寄出監獄之前，我想有人看了你的信，因為兩天前有幾位警察來到這裡，徹底挖掘了整片馬鈴薯田。我現在該怎麼辦？」農夫馬上回信說，「當然，播下馬鈴薯的種子啊。」
